Effect of hyperventilation on seizure length during electroconvulsive therapy.

چکیده
Hyperventilation reportedly prolongs the seizures during eletroconvulsive therapy (ECT) (Bridenbaugh et al. 1972; Holmberg 1953; Holmberg et al. 1956; Weiner 1979; Chater and Simpson 1988). As these studies did not measure the pCO2 concentration it is unclear if prolongation of seizures was due to hyperoxygenation or hypocapnia. In a controlled study Bergsholm et al. (1984) demonstrated an increase in seizure length by hypocapnia but not by hyperoxygenation. The effect of different levels of hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia as measured by end-tidal pCO2 on seizure duration in ECT was evaluated in the present study to establish its practical utility in a clinic~ setting.

Effect of passive hyperventilation on seizure duration in patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy.
The influence of end-expired carbon dioxide concentration (E'CO2) on seizure duration was studied in 30 depressed patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on three separate consecutive occasions. Unpremedicated patients breathed 100% oxygen before the induction of anaesthesia with methohexitone and the provision of partial neuromuscular blockade with suxamethonium. They then received...
متن کاملThe effect of ketamine versus thiopental sodium on hemodynamic profile and seizure duration during electroconvulsive therapy in patients with major depressive disorder: A randomized cross-over clinical trial
Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment in major depressive disorder (MDD). Earlier studies suggest that ketamine has antidepressive effects and prolongs seizure duration in favor of therapeutic efficacy of ECT. A great concern with the use of ketamine is its possible adverse hemodynamic effects during ECT. This study was conducted to compare the hemodynamic effect...

Introduction: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used to treat generalized seizures in psychiatric diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding dexmedetomidine to ketamine on heart rate and blood pressure changes in in psychiatric patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) Materials and Methods: In this randomized, double-blind randomized clinical trial, taken p...
متن کاملReconsideration of Augmentation Strategies in Electroconvulsive Therapy: Effects of the Concurrent Use of a Reduced Dose of Propofol with Divided Supplemental Remifentanil and Moderate Hyperventilation on Electroconvulsive Therapy-Induced Seizure Production and Adverse Events
Background: Although several treatment strategies to enhance the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) have been discussed, there have been no reports on the combined use of these treatments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of concurrent use of moderate hyperventilation and a reduced dose of propofol combined with divided remifentanil in ECT practice. Met...

Background: Today, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is used to manage many psychiatric illnesses. Although this treatment is safe and effective, sometimes it may cause frequent, short-term complications. Objectives: We investigated ECT-related side effects in the recovery ward of an academic hospital in Iran. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Shafa Hospital on...
